Shrawardine Millennium Green

A community green around the castle

The national Millennium Greens initiative aimed to create lasting areas of public open space close to people’s homes, marking the turn of the millennium. Natural England describes their purpose as providing places for relaxation, play and enjoyment of nature. The castle and associated settlement remains are a scheduled monument. Their protection recognises archaeological evidence extending beyond the standing stonework into the surrounding earthworks and buried remains. The castle guide explores that longer history. Historic England ↗.

The Trust and the 2001 archaeological surveys

In 2001, the Montford Parish Millennium Green Trust organised a programme of work to manage and interpret the castle, supported by Local Heritage Initiative funding. It included detailed topographical and geophysical surveys. Jones, p. 15 ↗.
